Am I the only one who prefers their skincare serums coming in a pump action bottle rather than a bottle with a pipette? Isn’t the whole dropper thing so over done?

We’ve all had an experience with both at some point during our skincare journeys. The dropper conjures visions that you are the scientist or chemist applying the products to ones face. Take a look on TikTok, YouTube and Instagram and you will see endless amounts of people applying their products with the dropper touching their face, oozing the gorgeous product down their cheeks.

But how efficient are droppers in skincare? The truth of the matter is that the dropper should never come into contact with your skin. All skin has good and bad bacteria on it, which by coming into contact with your skin, could potentially contaminate your product changing the efficiency. Of course, this isn’t going to be a huge deal if you have (hopefully) just cleansed your face – but it is best practice to make sure the dropper does not come into contact with your skin.

Furthermore, every time you open the product with the dropper, you are at risk of sabotaging it with air exposure if you leave the lid off long enough, or forget to tighten it after dispensing the product. I’ve been there countless of times – it happens! This will cause your product to expire quicker than normal, especially if it is something like a Retinol or Vitamin C.

Pumps on the other hand offer protection against air exposure and contamination as you are easily able to dispense the desired amount into your hands. People tend to over fill their droppers and end up using more product than necessary. A pump prevents this as, normally, the correct amount of product is distributed in one hit.

This was my number one complaint with The Ordinary Products. That was until I discovered DECIEM sell pumps! The pump is actually part of their NIOD range, but it fits the 30ml The Ordinary bottles perfectly. The pumps even have a locking system, which is excellent for travel. Since buying the pumps I have been in my element – no more droppers for me!
