Crème de La Mer Moisturising Cream Review

Crème de La Mer Moisturising Cream

I was extremely lucky when my partner bought me the the La Mer Moisturising Cream as a gift for Christmas in 2021. I’ve always wanted to try it because it’s super popular amongst those who use it.

What is it?

A luxurious cream moisturiser that’s not cheap by any means. It was created in 1965 by Max Huber, an aerospace physicist who suffered severe burns on his face after a lab explosion. He was desperate to find something that would heal the burns on his skin. Huber used sea kelp in one of his formulations and developed what he called Miracle Broth which helped heal his burns. Miracle broth became what we now know as Creme de la Mer.

What Do I Think?

I was somewhat apprehensive to use this. I didn’t want to be disappointed. After all, many people rave about how good this cream is. In theory, this was a cream perfect for my skin type (dry). I thought it would be perfect for winter, so I opted to open it when the weather turned colder.

My first impressions were that it had a nice texture. Initially it’s a thick almost waxy texture, but it melts down when the heat from your fingertips works it into the skin. It takes a little while to melt down, you do feel you spend a while rubbing your finger tips together before you can apply it to your face.

A little amount really does go a long way, so I have found 30ml size has lasted a while. It feels nice and nourishing on the skin. The finish after application I wouldn’t say is particularly flattering. Sure, my skin looked hydrated, but it also veered too much on the greasy side for my liking – and I’d like to point out I used the smallest amount. Due to the finish, I opted to use it more in the evenings – it would be too much for daytime.

There is a clean, perfumed, powdery, floral scent, somewhat reminiscent of a moisturiser your mum or gran might have used in the past. It’s not my favourite scent found in a moisturiser, but it’s not offensive either.

Any dry, flaky patches I had from the cold winter weather were gone as I continued using it.

Would I Recommend?

In terms of results, the cream promises to resolve dryness, firm the skin, reduce fine lines and wrinkles and rejuvenate the skin. If I’m being totally honest, the only claim this moisturiser delivered to me was resolving dryness. I did not see any reduction in fine lines, my skin did not feel firmer and nor do I feel my skin looked rejuvenated.

I’m not sure I would recommend it. My first complaint is it’s very expensive. I wouldn’t mind paying this if I saw some brilliant results from it, but I’ve only seen it tackle my dryness, which many other moisturisers out there can do.

This 30ml size costs £150.00. I can instantly tell you that I would recommend the Kate Somerville Total Repair Cream which is a similar price (£110.00 for 30ml) over the La Mer. With the Kate Somerville Total Repair Cream, I see the all results that the La Mer Cream promised plus more.

How I Use It

In the evening. I would take a small amount and apply it to my fingertips, massage them together to melt the cream a little bit then apply to my face and neck.

Would I Repurchase/Buy?

I wouldn’t buy it for myself, no. Like I mentioned earlier, I would go for the Kate Somerville Total Repair Cream instead if I was going to pay roughly the same price. I would happily have it and use as a gift for Christmas or something, but I don’t feel the need to rush out and buy it after using it.
