What type of cleanser should I use is a frequent question that gets asked. There are many different types of cleansers, and whilst most can in theory use all, there are certain ones that are better for your skin type.

When you try a cleanser, you should always see how your skin responds to it. Does it make your skin feel dry or tight afterwards? If yes, it’s probably not an ideal cleanser for you. Cleansing can be abrasive on the skin, so it’s important you use the right one. After cleansing, your skin should feel clean but never stripped.

Cream Cleansers

Best for: normal, dehydrated, dry and sensitive skin.

Cream cleansers are typically good for skins that err on the drier side. Thanks to their moisturising properties, they are great for adding a boost of moisture, whilst being kind to the skin. They can remove most types of makeup. Some will need removing with a damp cloth, so read the instructions on the packaging.

Balm Cleansers

Best for: normal, dehydrated, dry and sensitive skin.

Balm Cleansers are fantastic makeup removers. Due to this, they are normally used as a first cleanse in a double-cleanse routine. They are typically made of oils, waxes and butters which melt upon contact with the skin to a oily consistency. Sometimes they emulsify into a milk when water is added. They leave your skin feeling replenished and soft.

Treatment Cleansers

Best for: Typically spot-prone skin.

Cleansers have evolved over the years, and some now contain active ingredients to take your cleanse one step further. Some cleansers contain acids, which are good for skins suffering with breakouts or uneven skin tone and texture. Others contain clay or sulfur, which aids with breakouts and congestion on the skin. Whilst these cleansers have their benefits, you may wish to avoid using these every single day, especially the ones that contain acids, since you do not want to disrupt your skincare barrier too much.

Gel and Foaming cleansers are not all equal, some are gentler than others. The stripping true foaming cleansers are best for those with oily or combination skin, whereas the lightly-foaming, more gel-based cleansers are good for all. These are usually best used as a morning or second cleanse, though there are some out there that will remove a full face of makeup.
