La Mer vs Nivea – How Similar Are They?

La Mer vs Nivea

I feel like you can’t use a pot of La Mer without comparing it to Nivea. Everyone always says that Nivea is a dupe for the La Mer, but is it really? It’s time for a little La Mer vs Nivea post.

One costs £150 and the other as little as £2.50 depending on where you buy it and what size. I’m not going to delve into comparing ingredient lists because there’s enough content out there for that. So for this post I’ll purely be talking about results and experience.

If you saw my review post on the La Mer cream, you’ll know I wasn’t hugely impressed with it. It’s a nice cream, don’t get me wrong, I just didn’t see any results that truly warranted the price tag. I’ve had a relationship with the Nivea Cream for quite a few years. I used it a lot when I was in my early 20’s during the winter months to help relieve my dry skin.

If I had £1 every time someone told me that their gran/mother/aunt used Nivea and had not a single line on their face, I’d have enough money to buy and endless supply of La Mer.

The Nivea is slightly creamier and easier to massage in/melt down. However, there’s no denying that the La Mer gives you a totally different experience. I’m not sure if it’s somewhat placebo – the branding, price and packaging certainly help it feel more elevated and luxurious? That being said, ultimately they bothwill give you the same result – moisturised skin.

I wanted to see if my partner and friend could guess which one was the more expensive moisturiser so I did a little blind test. I applied the Nivea and the La Mer to their hands and they had to tell me which one they thought was more expensive based on the smell and texture/feel. The results were inconclusive because my friend guessed the La Mer was more expensive correctly, whereas my partner thought the Nivea was more expensive.

So if I had to choose between the two, I’d buy the Nivea and then spend the remaining money on my serums.  If I’d have seen something truly miraculous from the La Mer, I’d certainly rebuy it. But why would I spend £150 on something that just moisturised my skin?

Have you tried either? What’s your thoughts on how they compare?
