Some products you pick up because they’re trending, others because they’re a no brainer when they cost so little. For me, the Boots Glycerin and Rosewater Toner fell firmly into the latter camp. At £2.75, it seemed almost rude not to.
What is it?
A hydrating toner designed to add a dose of moisturise the skin.
What Do I Think?
The vintage inspired packaging is what first caught my eye. It’s the sort of thing you’d imagine sitting in your grandmother’s bathroom cabinet. Inside, the formula is refreshingly simple. The name is slightly misleading, however. There’s no actual rosewater here, just Rosa Damascena flower oil, which delivers the heady rose scent. It’s a shame really, because rosewater has proper soothing credentials, whereas rose oil is largely here for fragrance.
What it does have in spades, thankfully, is glycerin. And that’s the bit worth paying attention to. Glycerin is one of the hardest working humectants, drawing moisture into the skin and keeping it there. Used after cleansing, it gives an instant, lightweight hit of hydration that makes serums glide on more easily and stops skin feeling tight or stripped.
Boots suggests sweeping it on with cotton wool, but I prefer to decant a little into my palms and press it in. It’s quicker, less wasteful, and feels more satisfying.
As for the reviews claiming it replaces moisturiser altogether… I can’t agree. It’s a nice prep step, but my skin still needs a proper cream afterwards.
Sadly, this is where our relationship ended. Despite ticking all the sensible boxes, my skin simply didn’t like it. Redness, blotchiness, and a general sense of irritation crept in after a few weeks uses. Disappointing, especially given its glowing fan club online. But skincare is nothing if not personal. One person’s bargain miracle is another’s facial tantrum.

Would I recommend?
The reaction I had makes it hard to recommend, but as mentioned, skincare is personal. You may get on fine with it.
