At long last, the Kate Somerville HydraKate Illuminating SPF 50+ Drops have landed in the UK, and with warmer weather approaching, the timing couldn’t be better.
What is it?
Kate Somerville HydraKate Illuminating SPF 50+ Drops is a mineral sunscreen which promises to leave no white cast and hydrate.
What Do I Think?
I’ll be honest, I’m wary of mineral sunscreens. Too often, they’re ghostly, chalky, and drying and as such I find myself avoiding them and struggling to recommend them. But this one? A total game changer. It’s so cosmetically elegant that you’d never guess it contained mineral filters, let alone a hefty 24.5% Non-Nano Zinc Oxide. The Sheer Mineral Pigments blend seamlessly, leaving a subtle radiance rather than a tell-tale white cast.
Being part of the HydraKate range, this sunscreen leans into hydration, with Ectoin added to soothe and quench thirsty skin. The result? A formula that’s light yet nourishing, leaving skin plump, luminous, and fresh. If you’re after a matte finish, move along – this one is all about glow. But for those of us with dry or normal skin, it’s a dream. The silky texture melts in beautifully, absorbing without greasiness or stickiness. Oily skin types might find it a touch too rich, but on my parched face, it gives a welcome hit of moisture.
Another win? No dreaded white cast and no chalky residue on my paler whitecast. Whilst it looks pretty on the skin without makeup, with the kind of texture it has, and the flattering glow it gives the skin, I believe this will look gorgeous under makeup, possibly even allowing you to skip the need for a primer.
If I had one gripe, it’s the name. ‘Drops’ suggests a few drops will suffice, when in reality, you need a good two finger-length squeeze for proper protection. But that’s a minor quibble, in an otherwise excellent launch and the instructions say to apply liberally.
Would I recommend?
It’s another fantastic launch from Kate Somerville, who in my eyes can do no wrong, and one I’ll be repurchasing. If you want a mineral sunscreen with high protection and a gorgeous finish, this is one to try. However, I can’t safely recommend this for all skin tones since it is a mineral sunscreen and there is likely to be somewhat of a white cast if you have a darker skin tone.
