Not every skincare product needs to be exciting. Some of the best things on my bathroom shelf are dependably useful. They do not have a cult following or a waiting list. They just work, consistently, every time you reach for them. The Dermalogica Intensive Moisture Balance is one of those products.

What is it?

A nourishing moisturiser designed for dry, dehydrated skin.

What Do I Think?

I have dry skin, and I am particular about moisturisers in the way that only people with genuinely dry skin tend to be. Rich is not always enough. Rich and well-formulated is what actually makes a difference. This one earns that description.

The formula centres on a BioReplenish Complex that delivers barrier lipids to help the skin recover and build resilience. A prebiotic Chlorella Algae complex works to rebalance the skin’s microbiome. Hyaluronic acid, echinacea, centella asiatica and aloe vera lock in hydration and help reduce the appearance of fine lines. It is a considered lineup, and you can feel it on the skin.

Despite being designed for dry and dehydrated skin, I think people with normal skin would also get on well with it. It is rich without being greasy. It absorbs properly rather than sitting on the surface. It feels comforting rather than heavy.

It is particularly good for those moments when skin has been through something. Too much sun, an overzealous retinoid session, a week of travel in air-conditioned hotels. It calms everything down quickly and without fuss.

I use it primarily at night. It could work in the morning, but I find that pairing a cream this nourishing with a weightier SPF can tip into too much. At night there is nothing to compete with.

One more thing worth mentioning. It has never once clogged my pores or caused a breakout, which richer creams can sometimes do. For anyone who has avoided heavyweight moisturisers for that reason, this is worth reconsidering.

Would I recommend?

Yes. If you’re dry or sensitised and after a soothing, nurturing, nourishing moisturiser, then this is a nice one to try.

I apply after serums in my night time routine as my last step. It could work in the day, but I personally find it too much with sunscreen layered on top.
