Tatcha The Brightening Serum Review

Tatcha occupies a particular place in the skincare landscape. It is unambiguously a luxury brand, and it makes no apology for that. What separates it from other luxury skincare is that the formulas tend to justify the price rather than simply looking beautiful on a shelf. The textures are consistently exceptional, the ingredients are considered, and the results are usually worth the investment. Tatcha The Brightening Serum is a morning product, and a good one.

What is it?

A brightening and firming serum.

What Do I Think?

Founded by Vicky Tsai in San Francisco and drawing heavily on Japanese botanical traditions, Tatcha is a brand that takes its influences seriously rather than using them as decoration.

The vitamin C delivery system here is more interesting than most. Rather than a standard ascorbic acid formula that can oxidise and irritate, Tatcha uses Ascorbyl Glucoside alongside Japanese Plum, known as nankou ume, as a time-release vitamin C source over twelve hours. This means a gradual, sustained dose rather than an immediate hit that fades. Ferulic acid is included to stabilise and enhance the vitamin C, and the brand’s signature Hadasei-3 complex of fermented rice, green tea and algae provides the amino acids and antioxidants that underpin most of their formulas.

The texture on first application is almost watery, silky and lighter than expected. It absorbs quickly and gives an immediate sense of hydration and plumpness without any heaviness. In winter, when my complexion tends toward dullness, this was particularly welcome in the morning routine.

It layers without any issues. I used it alongside Tatcha’s Dewy Skin Cream and with products from other brands, and encountered no pilling or balling, which is always a practical concern with lighter serums under richer creams.

The finish is radiant rather than oily, which is a line that vitamin C serums do not always manage to walk. For anyone with sensitive skin who has avoided vitamin C for fear of irritation, the time-release format here is worth considering as a gentler alternative to more aggressive formulations.

Would I recommend?

Tatcha The Brightening Serum is expensive. But within the Tatcha range, and within the broader brightening serum category, it earns its place.
