The Ordinary Soothing & Barrier Support Serum Review

The Ordinary Soothing & Barrier Support Serum

Every time I pick up this serum, I can’t help but think of Calpol. You know, that milky pink medicine that felt like a cure all when we were kids. Nostalgia aside, the The Ordinary Soothing & Barrier Support Serum is one of those products that does its job, and I’ve come to really appreciate it.

What is it?

A soothing barrier repair serum designed to repair damaged skin barriers, reduce redness, and boost hydration.

What Do I Think?

Launched a couple of years ago, this serum is all about repairing a compromised skin barrier, calming irritation, and reducing redness. That pink tone is down to cyanocobalamin (better known as vitamin B12) but rest assured, it applies clear and won’t have you looking like you’ve been at the raspberry slushies.

The formula is a really thoughtful blend of lipids, vitamins and clever plant technologies. There’s niacinamide, which not only soothes but helps even tone over time, bisabolol from chamomile, a classic anti-inflammatory, plant derived ceramides to prevent moisture loss and three forms of gallic acid to reduce irritation and redness. It’s fragrance free, and feels calming before you’ve even noticed the results.

Now, The Ordinary claims it can repair a skin barrier in just two hours. I’d say that’s optimistic but within a couple of uses over the course of a few days  I really did notice a difference. My skin looked less flushed, felt more comfortable and noticeably plumper. Back to its old self before I damaged my skin barrier. It absorbs quickly and layers beautifully with other products, so you don’t have to overhaul your routine to slot it in. Though if your barrier is impaired, it’ll do you good just to back off your other serums and just use this.

While it’s great as a SOS treatment when your skin barrier is already angry, I like to use it proactively, especially alongside retinoids and exfoliating acids. It helps stave off irritation before it even starts.

Would I recommend?

I’d call this a great ‘just in case’ product. One to keep in your stash for the colder months or whenever you’ve overdone it with actives. If you’re prone to irritation or sensitivity, this might just be one of the most sensible additions you can make to your bathroom shelf.
