My Thoughts
First produced in Cologne as far back as 1799, it’s astonishing that this humble little cologne has endured for centuries. In an industry obsessed with novelty and reinvention, there’s real comfort in something that has been quietly doing its thing for over 200 years. That alone earns it a place in any fragrance lover’s collection.
The opening is a lively squeeze of lemon, bergamot and orange. A concoction reminiscent of a thirst quenching summer drink. At its heart is lavender and rosemary, lending a fleeting herbal crispness before giving way to neroli and petitgrain in the base.
And we can’t not talk about the bottle design. It’s a charming relic of another era. The ornate turquoise and gold label feels like it belongs in your grandparents’ bathroom cabinet, the sort of thing your grandfather may have splashed on liberally before dinner, or your grandmother dabbed on linen sheets to freshen them up. It’s pure nostalgia of times gone by.
In the end, for me 4711 Original is not about sillage or performance. It’s about giving yourself a quick uplifting burst. It’s inexpensive and enduringly lovely.

I don’t find it projects particularly well, sitting quite close to the skin.
Longevity
None of it lingers for very long. You’ll get fifteen, maybe twenty minutes at best, but that’s sort of the point. It’s a fragrance designed to lift your mood, to refresh, to reset.
When I would wear it
It costs very little, which makes the lack of longevity entirely forgivable. It’s the kind of scent you throw in a handbag, a desk drawer, even a glove compartment, ready for the moments when you want to feel instantly fresher, cooler, more awake. Spray it on yourself after a train journey, splash it on your wrists at your desk, or mist it around the room when you want to clear the air.
